What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra (Sanskrit: नक्षत्र, “star cluster”) is one of the 27 lunar mansions used in Vedic astrology. The Moon travels through all 27 Nakshatras approximately every 27.3 days. Your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) is the Nakshatra where the Moon was positioned at the exact moment of your birth. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the ecliptic and is subdivided into four Padas (quarters) of 3°20' each.

Nakshatras are more precise than the 12 Rashis — each of the 12 Rashis contains either 2 or 3 Nakshatras. While Rashi gives your broad lunar personality, your Nakshatra reveals specific personality drivers, career aptitude, relationship compatibility, deity connection, and auspicious name syllables.

Moon Rashi vs Sun Rashi — which matters more?

In Vedic astrology, the Moon Rashi (Chandra Rashi) is considered far more significant than the Sun sign because the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and subconscious patterns. Horoscopes in Indian newspapers and apps are written for Moon Rashi, not Sun sign.

The 9 Nakshatra Lords (Grahas) — Vimshottari Dasha

Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of 9 planetary lords (Navagrahas): Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury — in a repeating sequence across all 27 Nakshatras. Your Nakshatra lord determines your current Mahadasha (major period) in the Vimshottari Dasha system, which governs which planet's energy dominates your life at any given age.

Practical Uses of Nakshatra Knowledge

👶 Baby Naming (Namakarana)

Each Nakshatra provides 4 auspicious syllables (one per Pada). Traditional Hindu names begin with the syllable of the birth Nakshatra, connecting the name's vibration to the baby's moon energy.

💑 Marriage Compatibility (Kundali Milan)

Nakshatra-based compatibility checking uses an 8-factor system (Ashtakoot) scoring 36 total points. A score above 18 is considered suitable; above 28 is excellent. Nadi and Gana factors are critical.

📅 Auspicious Timing (Muhurat)

Nakshatras are one of the key factors in calculating Muhurat. Some Nakshatras like Rohini, Hasta, and Pushya are universally auspicious; others like Moola, Jyeshtha are avoided for new beginnings.

🙏 Deity & Mantra

Each Nakshatra has a presiding deity (Devata) and corresponding mantra. Regular worship of your Nakshatra deity strengthens the planetary lord's energy in your chart, bringing clarity and protection.
