What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya (चौघड़िया, “four ghadi”) is a Vedic time-keeping system originating in Jyotish (Vedic astrology). Each day and night is divided into 8 equal periods, each approximately 90 minutes long. Every period is ruled by a planet and classified as auspicious, neutral, or inauspicious — giving you a daily roadmap of the best times to start important tasks.
Unlike Muhurat (which requires a full Panchang calculation), Choghadiya is quick and practical — determined by just two inputs: the day of the week and the local sunrise/sunset time. This makes it ideal for everyday decisions.
The 7 Choghadiya Periods
| Name | Planet | Quality | Good For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Moon | Auspicious | All activities |
| Shubh | Jupiter | Auspicious | Marriage, ceremonies |
| Labh | Mercury | Auspicious | Business, trade |
| Char | Venus | Neutral | Travel only |
| Rog | Mars | Inauspicious | Avoid new starts |
| Kaal | Saturn | Inauspicious | Avoid important work |
| Udveg | Sun | Inauspicious | Government work only |
First Daytime Choghadiya by Weekday
The sequence of the 7 Choghadiya types is fixed, but the starting period depends on the day of the week:
| Day | 1st Period (Sunrise) | Best Early Morning |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Udveg | Char or Labh (3rd–4th period) |
| Monday | Amrit | Amrit (sunrise itself is the best) |
| Tuesday | Rog | Labh or Shubh (3rd–4th period) |
| Wednesday | Labh | Labh (sunrise is excellent for business) |
| Thursday | Shubh | Shubh (sunrise ideal for ceremonies) |
| Friday | Char | Labh or Amrit (later in the morning) |
| Saturday | Kaal | Shubh or Amrit (3rd–5th period) |

Choghadiya vs Muhurat — What's the Difference?
Choghadiya is a quick, daily tool — it divides every day into 16 fixed time slots based on the weekday. It's ideal for everyday decisions: when to start working, send an email, begin a journey, or make a phone call.
Shubh Muhurat is a deeper analysis of the full Panchang — it considers Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and Vara together. Use Muhurat for life events like weddings, griha pravesh, and business inaugurations.
