Understanding the Five Limbs of the Day

The word Panchang comes from Sanskrit: pancha (five) and anga (limb). These five elements together form the Hindu almanac, consulted daily for religious, agricultural, and social planning across the Indian subcontinent for over 3,000 years.

Each element represents a different quality of time — whether it is favourable for new beginnings, spiritual practice, travel, or rest. Together, they give a complete picture of the energy of any given day.

The Five Panchang Elements Explained

① Tithi — Lunar Day

One of 30 divisions of the lunar month. Each Tithi spans 12° of angular distance between Moon and Sun. Shukla Paksha (waxing) Tithis 2–5, 7, 10–13, and Purnima are generally auspicious. Ashtami, Chaturdashi, and Amavasya are avoided for new beginnings.

② Vara — Weekday

Each day is ruled by a planet: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn). Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday are generally auspicious for new beginnings. Tuesday and Saturday have restrictive energies.

③ Nakshatra — Lunar Mansion

The 27 Nakshatras show which segment of the zodiac the Moon occupies. The Moon governs the mind — so its Nakshatra strongly influences emotional tone and auspiciousness. Rohini, Hasta, Pushya, Anuradha, Revati are universally auspicious. Ardra, Ashlesha, Moola, Jyeshtha require caution.

④ Yoga — Sun-Moon Combined Quality

Calculated from the combined longitude of Sun and Moon. 27 Yogas ranging from auspicious (Siddhi, Shubha, Amrita) to inauspicious (Vishkambha, Vajra, Vyaghata). Yoga changes roughly every 24 hours and adds another layer of quality to the day.

⑤ Karana — Half-Tithi

Each Tithi is divided into two Karanas (~6 hours each). There are 11 types — 4 fixed and 7 repeating. Vishti (Bhadra) Karana is particularly inauspicious for starting new work. Bava, Balava, Kaulava are considered auspicious.

Shukla Paksha vs Krishna Paksha — Which is Better?

The lunar month is divided into two fortnights: Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon, Pratipada to Purnima) and Krishna Paksha (waning Moon, Pratipada to Amavasya). Shukla Paksha Tithis are generally more auspicious for new beginnings, celebrations, and growth-oriented activities.

Krishna Paksha is preferred for ancestral rites (Shradh), introspection, and completing existing projects. Purnima (full moon) is highly auspicious for worship, fasting, and charity. Amavasya (new moon) is sacred for ancestral offerings (Pitru Tarpan).

Especially Auspicious Combinations to Look For

Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga

Formed when specific Vara-Nakshatra combinations align. Considered excellent for all purposes including business, travel, and ceremonies.

Amrit Siddhi Yoga

Highly auspicious yoga formed by certain weekday-Nakshatra pairs. The name means "nectar of success" — ideal for major life events.

Pushya Nakshatra + Thursday

One of the most powerful combinations for new business, education, and important purchases. Jupiter rules both Thursday and Pushya.

Purnima + Auspicious Nakshatra

Full moon on Rohini, Pushya, or Hasta Nakshatra compounds the positive energy significantly — ideal for initiating spiritual practices.
